South Africa: Cop shoots himse

A Durban police officer shot himself on Thursday after being arrested on corruption charges, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the officer - a detective from the Durban Central police station - was in a critical condition in hospital.

Mdunge said the officer had made an arrangement with a member of the ash.

The man had informed the Organised Crime Unit of the incident and a trap was set.

"He was caught in the trap yesterday (Thursday) when he collected the money under police surveillance," said Mdunge.

The police officer was arrested and his firearm was seized.

"He was put into a police car and was being taken to the provincial SA Police Service building - where he was meant to give a statement to police," said Mdunge.
Police confirmed that the police officer was not handcuffed.

"When he alighted from the vehicle, he grabbed a firearm from one of the officers and attempted to shoot the officer... but then turned the gun on himself," said Mdunge.

He sustained one gunshot wound to the head and was taken to hospital.
