Corrupt cop gets four years
Johannesburg - A Heidelberg policeman, charged with corruption, has been sentenced to four years in prison, police said on Wednesday.
The 42-year-old sergeant was convicted of soliciting money from a man along the R549 on October 3 2006.
"It is believed that the officer stopped the man for reckless and negligent driving and forced him to pay a R600 spot fine," said Captain Tshilate Thivhulawi.
The man said he did not have the money on him and made an arrangement with the policeman to give him the money the next day.
The officer took the man's cellphone as a deposit for the cash and agreed to give it back to the man, once he had received the R600.
In the interim, the man contacted the anti-corruption unit, who arrested the officer during the cash exchange.
The policeman was sentenced in the Heidelberg Magistrate's Court on Monday and was not given the option of paying a fine.
He will serve out his sentence in the Heidelberg prison.
