Missing evidence in several serious police misconduct cases sparks a major change in who's taking care of it.

In at least two recent cases of officers accused of rape, key evidence has gone mysteriously missing before their trials. Now state police are taking over.

The rape trial against Baltimore City Police Officer William Welch was supposed to begin this month. Instead, it was postponed when key evidence, including soiled clothing, a rape kit and other items, mysteriously went missing.

South Africa: Police officer f

A R4 000 bribe from a suspected rapist has cost a police officer not only her freedom but her job too.

The Johannesburg Magistrate's Court yesterday found 30-year-old Zanele Radebe guilty of extortion and sentenced her to three years' house arrest.

She was also sentenced to five years in prison, suspended for five years, on condition that she is not charged with extortion again.

In addition, she has been ordered to do 578 hours of community work.

She was also fired from her job at Douglasdale police station in Sandton.

According to the charge sheet, Radebe was the investigating officer in a case where a 35-year-old woman laid a rape charge against her former boyfriend.

"She suggested to the accused that (the alleged victim) withdraw or arrange for the docket to be permanently withdrawn for R4 000," the charge sheet reads.

It also says Radebe unlawfully accepted the bribe from the suspect and, using the complainant's name, wrote an affidavit stating that she was withdrawing the charge against her former lover.

"At this point I feel I need to withdraw the charges. It may be stupid but I am at peace and need to move on with my life.

"The case going to court and seeing my ex-boyfriend in court is traumatic enough," Radebe is alleged to have said in an affidavit.

It all went wrong for Radebe when the alleged rape suspect approached the police officer, accusing her of extorting money from him to have his case withdrawn.

Radebe was charged with extortion, corruption and defeating the ends of justice, but was convicted only of the first charge.

The state said that what she did amounted to abuse of power, breach of trust and violation of legal trust.

Radebe was also found to have lied when she said she was in love with the accused, because he denied her claim when questioned by a correctional officer.

State prosecutor Blanche van Eeden on Wednesday requested direct imprisonment for Radebe, saying the charges against her were serious and that she was in a position of power when the offence was committed.

The presiding magistrate, however, said that with the overcrowding in prisons, it would not be fair to send a first offender to jail and that correctional supervision was more appropriate for Radebe.

He, however, said he had found Radebe a manipulative person and that her not being a police officer anymore should be punishment enough.

Radebe is expected to start her community service tomorrow.
