Police union boss suspended af

Victorian Police Association secretary Paul Mullett has been suspended from duty, following two days of testimony before the Office of Police Integrity (OPI) hearing.

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon says it is up to the Police Association to decide his future in the union.

"This afternoon I have suspended Senior Sergeant Paul Mullett on full pay," she said.

"I have formed a view with a great deal of thought that he has in fact breached the Telecommunications Intercept Act and also the provisions of the OPI Act."

Mr Mullet is accused of breaching the confidentiality of the OPI's private hearing by asking former assistant commissioner Noel Ashby about the proceedings.

He is also accused of compromising a police investigation by tipping off two officers that they were under surveillance for alleged links to a 2003 gangland murder.

He admits the pair was warned to be careful who they talked to, but says he thought they were being investigated about a union matter, not a murder.

Mr Mullett angrily denied being involved in any illegal or inappropriate activity that could have compromised the murder investigation.

He told the hearing he was no angel but he would never been involved in anything that would compromise a police operation.

The OPI delegate conducting the questioning accused Mr Mullett of acting in a god-like way and believing he was above the law.

Mr Mullett says he plans to continue as secretary of the Police Association and is seeking legal advice to ensure he can continue in the position.
