Police officers in Kenya are disappointed that a report by a task force that was appointed by former police commissioner Edwin Nyaseda in 2003 seems to have been pushed to the back burner as they continue suffering.

The report, which talked about how to improve the terms and conditions of the police force and how to cope with the modern challenges of law enforcement, was presented to President Mwai Kibaki by police commissioner, Maj-Gen Hussein Ali, on April 27, 2005, during the launch of the community policing initiative at Ruai police station in Nairobi.

OPI hearing told jealousy led

A Victorian Office of Police Integrity hearing has heard professional jealousies led to the Assistant Commissioner Noel Ashby leaking high level information about other officers.

The OPI inquiry has heard secretly recorded phone conversations of Mr Ashby telling the Police Association Secretary Paul Mullett, that Victoria Police was considering paying the Deputy Commissioner Simon Overland, to go to a business school in Paris.

Mr Ashby conceded he told Mr Mullett, after saying in an earlier conversation he wanted it made public and because he was jealous.

Mr Ashby is already under fire after admitting yesterday he read information he was not supposed to have access to.

The information relates to an investigation into alleged police links to a 2003 murder.

The OPI believes Mr Ashby passed it onto the Police Association, from where it got to the targets of the investigation.

Mr Ashby denies this.
