New Jersey, USA: Female detect

PARAMUS - The female detective who brought allegations of sexual misconduct against former Paramus Police Chief Fred Corrubia suffered "stress, depression, humiliation and fear" in the months since the story was made public, her mother said Tuesday.

Addressing the Paramus City Council, Josephine Ruggiero said her daughter Christine's "only mistake was to be in the wrong place at the wrong time" on Dec. 17, when she has alleged that Corrubia groped her at a Washington Township restaurant.

Detective Ruggiero, who is on paid administrative leave, was in the audience but did not speak.

Josephine Ruggiero did not say what Corrubia allegedly did, saying only that he "conducted himself in a most inappropriate way." She said there were several witnesses to the misconduct, whom she accused of not testifying truthfully to a grand jury.

"Why would a young officer who had no ax to grind and who was so grateful to her superior officers for all the support over the last three years, and how they honored her father just nine days before, would suddenly decide to take on her chief for no reason?" Josephine Ruggerio asked the council.

The council's inquiry into the allegations against Corrubia will not be completed until investigators review materials from a criminal probe of the matter that was closed this month, officials said Tuesday night.

A Bergen County grand jury refused to bring a sexual misconduct indictment against Corrubia on Aug. 13 after hearing testimony from 33 witnesses, including Corrubia and nearly two dozen other officers.

Ruggiero has filed a lawsuit against Corrubia, the Police Department and the borough.
