Ex-police chief freed in corru

Former Ranau police chief Asst Supt Dzulbaharin Ismail, who was charged with corruption, was given a discharge not amounting to acquittal yesterday.

Sessions Court judge Ismail Brahim made the decision following an application by the prosecution.

ASP Dzulbaharin, 41, had allegedly used his position as chairman of the tender committee of the Ranau station to secure a tender for food supply to detainees of the station’s lockup for Syarikat Pemborong NZA. His wife Noorzainain Md Durun owns the company.

The case was to have gone to trial yesterday but prosecuting officer Ramli Ali from the Anti-Corruption Agency applied to the court to have the accused freed.

ASP Dzulbaharin had claimed trial when he was charged on Dec 23, 2004. The offence was allegedly committed on Jan 27, 1999 at the Ranau police station operations room.

The offence under Section 15 of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 is punishable with a jail term of between 14 days and 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the gratification or RM10,000 whichever is higher.
