EGYPT: Death sentence for police officer who killed protesters
A criminal court in Cairo sentenced a police officer to death Sunday for killing protesters, the first death penalty imposed since the revolution that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian state TV reported Monday.

The court sentenced Mohammed Mahmud Abdul Mun'em in absentia for killing 20 protesters and wounding 15 more on Jan. 28, a day when hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Egypt.

The court found Mun'em had fired randomly at demonstrators, Nile TV said. Authorities have been unable to locate Mun'em, and it was not immediately clear what e... Read more

Charges against Deptford offic

The Gloucester County Prosecutor dismissed criminal charges against two Deptford police officers following the acquittal of a third officer involved in an alleged brutality case.

The two officers, Timothy Parks and Brian Green, along with recently acquitted Patrolman John Gillespie, still face administrative charges and could lose their jobs.

A Superior Court jury acquitted Gillespie on charges of aggravated assault and official misconduct this month. He was accused of choking and beating Joseph Rao, a 19-year-old Philadelphia man, during a traffic stop last year.

Parks testified during Gillespie's trial that he punched Rao twice in the face with a closed fist after responding as a backup officer to the scene on Feb. 2, 2006. He faced the same charges -- aggravated assault and official misconduct.

If convicted, Gillespie and Parks would have faced up to 15 years in prison.

Green was to be tried on Sept. 12 on perjury and misconduct indictments for allegedly lying to investigators about the incident.

Motions for the dismissals will be presented to a Superior Court judge this week, prosecutor's office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said Wednesday.

All three officers have been suspended without pay from the department since shortly after the incident. Whether they can return to their jobs will be decided administratively, said Louis Lessig, the attorney representing the police department.

Township police officers testified during Gillespie's three-week trial that the township police department is divided, saying the department is run by a small group of higher-ranking officers.

In a rare decision, presiding Superior Court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson issued a protective order for officers who testified after listening to police officers who said they felt pressured and intimidated for testifying on behalf of Gillespie.

Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton said he plans to work with Deptford Police Chief John Marolt to conduct a review of the department's operations.

"In light of the jury's verdict, the only certainty in trying the remaining matters would be to prolong the time it will take to address the concerns of the Deptford Police Department," Dalton said in a prepared statement Wednesday. "This incident has raised some administrative issues within the department, which its commanding officers recognize and are seeking to address."

Defense attorney Tony Fusco, who represents Green, said he was overjoyed with the outcome.

"We wants to get them reinstated and back on the job," Fusco said Wednesday.

Defense attorneys John Eastlack, who represents Parks, and Ron Helmer, who represented Gillespie, could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
