GLENVILLE, N.Y. -- There are just 22 officers on the Glenville police force. While the department may be small, its officers pride themselves on serving a community they say deserves their best.

"They want to know that their department is professional and that the person that is responding is competent, and will do a good job, and can be relied upon," said Glenville Police Chief, Michael Ranalli.

That's why he said the actions leading to the arrest of six year veteran; Chris Charnews have given the department a black eye.

Fifth Hollywood police officer

The FBI arrested a fifth Hollywood police officer Thursday on charges stemming from the alleged leak of an undercover sting operation involving four other officers who pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy charges.

Federal agents arrested Lt. Chuck Roberts at his home early Thursday, said FBI spokesman Rick Enriquez. Roberts was released on $100,000 bail after a brief initial court appearance on charges of making false statements to the FBI, according to court records.

Roberts, a 23-year veteran, faces a possible five-year prison sentence if convicted. His attorney did not immediately return e-mail or telephone messages seeking comment. A June 14 arraignment date was scheduled.

The FBI was forced to shut down its "Operation Tarnished Badge" investigation in February when word leaked prematurely to one of the probe's targets. Hollywood Police Chief James Scarberry has said he informed senior commanders and city officials about the investigation but was unaware of any wrongdoing.

An FBI affidavit filed in federal court says Roberts was informed about the investigation by one of those senior commanders and told another officer, who then disclosed it to one of the people under investigation. The identities of the others involved were not revealed.

In subsequent interviews with the FBI, Roberts denied even knowing about the undercover probe until arrests were made, according to the affidavit.

Roberts, the affidavit says, told others that "he felt justified in lying to the FBI insofar as his statements were not under oath at the time."

Roberts, 48, and two other officers were suspended last week without pay because of their alleged links to the leak investigation. No charges have been brought against the other two: Maj. Frank McGarry and Officer Tammy Clyde.

The four officers who have pleaded guilty could face life in prison but will likely get far less than that under federal sentencing guidelines. The sting operation involved FBI agents posing as New York-based mobsters involved in heroin trafficking and numerous other illegal activities.

The FBI affidavit says that agents had hoped to continue and expand the investigation by using one of those four, Thomas Simcox, in a "clandestine capacity" within the Hollywood Police Department.
