Force to decide if senior dete
Victoria Police
will decide in the coming days whether to suspend a senior officer charged over the alleged bashing of an armed robbery suspect during questioning.
Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin, who was appointed to clean up the troubled armed offenders squad, has been charged by the Office of Police Integrity with counselling or procuring the alleged bashing while the suspect was being interviewed at the squad's office on May 10 last year. The event was filmed by secret cameras.
Three other members of the now disbanded squad — suspended detective Robert Dabb and former detectives Matthew Franc and Mark Butterfield — have also been charged with 23 counts of unlawful assault. A Victoria Police spokesman confirmed yesterday that the ethical standards department would decide later this week whether Inspector Rankin, who is on secondment with the federal police in the Solomon Islands, would be suspended from duty.
Inspector Rankin, the former head of the homicide squad, is understood to have returned home at the weekend to visit his family but could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
Police Association secretary Paul Mullett yesterday described Inspector Rankin as a "very respected member of the Victorian police force who, like the other three members facing charges, is entitled to the presumption of innocence".
A spokeswoman from the Australian Federal Police
said as the alleged incident took place prior to his secondment, it was a matter for Victoria Police.
