TV channel focuses on top cop’

MUMBAI — Maharashtra’s controversial top cop P.S. Pasricha, who loves being in the limelight, is ironically discovering that the electronic media is turning out to be his nemesis.

Pasricha’s lucrative trades in properties across different cities in Maharashtra over the past few years have got him into deep trouble, with the state government being forced to order a high-level probe into his alleged accumulation of wealth, and his nexus with builders.

The high-profile Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, who over the past quarter century cultivated an excellent network of contacts in the media, and is also among the most quoted and photographed police official in Mumbai, is now being exposed and hounded by the media.

A television channel and an investigative newspaper conducted a sting operation, involving an influential builder in Mumbai. The builder claimed his proximity to Pasricha and said that he had protected him and even bailed him out of trouble, by interceding on his behalf with the chief minister.

Pasricha vehemently denies the charges and has warned of legal action against the channel. But opposition parties in Maharashtra are determined to get him sacked, and have demanded a judicial enquiry.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil, who is also the home minister, has announced the setting up of a high-level probe, headed by the state’s chief secretary. But there are increasing demands that the top officer be sacked immediately.

Since 1975, Pasricha, and his family members, have been buying properties across Maharashtra, and selling it at hefty profits. Patil himself confirmed the numerous lucrative real estate deals entered into by the state's director-general of police over the years. In 1975, for instance, Pasricha bought a flat in housing scheme for government officers for under Rs300,000, but 25 years later sold if for Rs14 million. In 1985, his family members bought a 2.5-acre plot near Aurangabad for less than Rs100,000, which was sold 18 years later for Rs17.5 million.

The police officer has also reportedly bought land, commercial space, apartments and other real estate units in cities like Mumbai, Kolhapur and Nashik.

Pasricha is also alleged to have shielded a builder, with whom he had dealings, when he was facing trouble with the police. The builder was arrested on charges of hiring gangsters to browbeat a rival.

But according to the television channel, Pasricha, who was the director-general of the Anti Corruption Bureau in 2004, intervened and got the builder released, and allegedly hounded the police officer who took action against him.
