Chief Adviser asks police forc

Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed on Tuesday asked the police force to maintain utmost honesty, transparency and accountability in their actions to ensure good governance and rule of law in the country.

"The role of police forces is immense to establish good governance and rule of law in the country," he said while inaugurating the Police Week-2007 at Rajarbagh police line here.

The Chief Adviser said the present government is pledge bound to build a professional, skilled, service-oriented, transparent and accountable police force for the welfare of the people. On his arrival at the Rajarbagh Police line, the Chief Adviser was ceremonially received by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Noor Mohammad.

Speaker Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Advisers of the caretaker government, Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners, Chiefs of three Services, Cabinet Secretary, diplomats, former senior police officers and high police and civil officials were present on the occasion.

In the inaugural function, the Chief Adviser also handed over Bangladesh Police Medal and President Police Medal to the recipients who won the medals for their outstanding performances during their service careers.

Describing police as a service-oriented department, the Chief Adviser said the police forces have to work as a supplementary force of socio-economic development of the country along with protecting constitutional rights of the citizens.

He said, police have to take steps to protect lives and properties of the people from terrorists, extortionists and corrupt people and keep trade, commerce, investment, industrial sectors and other economic activities out of criminal activities.

The Chief Adviser said the police have to remember their major responsibilities in socio-economic sector. He asked the police to formulate appropriate work plan in conformity with socio-economic environment and implement them for the welfare of the country.

Laying emphasis on expansion and application of modern technology in arresting crimes, Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed asked police to enhance capacity to investigate crimes like cyber crime and money laundering along with traditional ones.

"Not only behavioral and structural developments, you have to bring some systemic changes to your actions and activities," he added.

He said the police have an important role to play in implementing the programmes taken by the present government for building a society free from terrorism and corruption.

Terming introduction of service delivery system in all police station under Dhaka Metropolis as a revolutionary steps, he said the people are getting speedy service following its introduction. He asked the concerned authorities to take steps for expansion of the service across the country in phases and ensuring their sustainability.

The Chief Adviser also put emphasis on expansion of the model thana concept across the country and take steps to involve local people through community police system to maintain law and order.

Referring to multifarious problems faced by police, he said the government is very much aware of their problems and will take steps to solve them. "The government will take initiatives to solve these problems in phases through increasing of family ration and risk allowances," he added.

Paying rich tributes to the police personnel who were killed on March 25 crackdown in 1971 by Pakistani forces, the Chief Adviser said their sacrifices and contributions will be written in golden letters to the history of the country's emergence.

He also paid glowing tribute to the memory of those police personnel who were killed at the time of discharging their professional duties saying their sacrifices will remain as an example for other police personnel.

Earlier, the Chief Adviser was presented a guard of honour by different contingents of police including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and horse mounted police.

The Chief Adviser inspected the guard and took salute. IG of Police Noor Mohammad accompanied the Chief Adviser.
