The former detective at the centre of new claims of police corruption in the Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry said today he had not hampered the investigation "in any way".

9 cops get immunity in corrupt

Nine police officers have been given immunity to testify before a grand jury in the ongoing probe of Chicago police corruption, a defense lawyer said Tuesday.
Michael Ficaro, who represents embattled Chicago Police Officer Jerome Finnigan, made the statement as he asked Judge John Fleming for permission to release the names of those who have testified and put them on the Internet.

Fleming denied Ficaro's request and said only the lawyers on both sides of the criminal case could have the names.

Finnigan and six other officers have been charged with felonies ranging from armed violence to burglary.

They have pleaded not guilty, though on Tuesday a lawyer for another defendant -- Officer Carl Suchocki -- said Officer Frank Villareal had "admitted his guilt."

Villareal's lawyer denied that.
