BULAWAYO – A burly police officer violently pushes two women into a corner at a busy shopping centre in Zimbabwe's second biggest city of Bulawayo.

"Mapositori munoda kuvhaira sitereki, basa nderekuparadza hupfumi hwenyika neblack market yenyu iyoyi. Manje matosungwa," the police officer bellowed in the local vernacular Shona language.

In brief, he was telling the two women that they were under arrest for destroying the economy because of their illegal foreign currency deals.

Officer in corruption probe fi

The corruption scandal that has already brought down two New Haven police officers has prompted the department to disband its Narcotics Unit. Now the mayor is launching a separate investigation into one of the officers who filed peperwork to retire.

The two officers arrested this week are out on bond but still considered officers because they are on paid administrative leave, but one of the officers is quickly working to change that.

Lt. William White, Sr. filed paperwork today with the city pension board to retire. White requested two things: an application for age annuity and an application to retire under a service-related disability. He has worked for the city for 39 years.

The announcement prompted Mayor John DeStefano to request an investigation into White's earnings and overtime payroll records.

In a released statement, DeStefano said, "We owe it to taxpayers to scrutinize all issues related to retirement before acting. This person is charged with serious violations of the public trust, who operated with significant autonomy, including authorizing his own overtime."

The Police and Fire Pension Board will take up the request April 12th. If the city moves to terminate White, he won't be eligible for medical coverage and other benefits.

White, 60, the head of the police department's Narcotics squad, and Det. Justen Kasperzyk, 34, were both charged this week as part of an FBI sting. White is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from drug scenes set up by the FBI.

The New Haven police department will now disband the Narcotics Unit and will rely on state police and federal agencies to monitor drug activity in the Elm City.

In the meantime, city leaders are bracing for the expected arrests of more officers. There is still no word on when that may happen.
