Milwaukee Officer Charged With

A Milwaukee police officer was charged Tuesday with attacking two people inside a church.

Twenty-six-year-old Shawn Humitz is accused of chasing a mentally ill man suspected of disorderly conduct into the church. Some parishioners of the Family Worship Center thought Humitz was being unnecessarily rough with the suspect and, according to the criminal complaint, asked for his name and badge number. Humitz allegedly objected and kicked one parishioner in the groin and struck another, Jimmy Turnage, in the face.

"It's a great day in the history of Milwaukee," parishioner Turnage said as he left the Milwaukee County Safety Building Tuesday.

Milwaukee County Court Commissioner advised Humitz that if convicted of the charges in the complaint, he faces a $10,000 fine, nine months in jail, or both, for each of the two charges.

The charges, two counts of battery, are the first against a Milwaukee police officer brought by newly elected County District Attorny John Chisholm and his newly created public integrity unit.

"And that would be staffed by one dedicated prosecutor who would review cases involving allegations of police misconduct," Chisholm said.

That prosecutor is Assistant District Attorney Douglas Simpson, who will handle the case against Humitz. The case also represents a promise DA Chisholm made when he ran for office, to help build trust between police officers and big part of the community which feels it's often betrayed by law enforcement.

"Allegations of police misconduct, they will be thouroughly investigated and that when appropriate we will take action on those cases," Chisholm said.

Humitz entered a plea of not guilty on both charges and he's free on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond. He has been suspended from the Milwaukee Police Department with pay. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 16.
