Sack Police bosses, Col. Besig
OPPOSITION Forum for democratic Change (FDC) president, Retired Col. Kizza Besigye, has called for the sacking of all Police bosses if the force is to regain credibility.
“If the Ugandan Police is to be respected, it must sack or remove all the wrong-doers,” Besigye said during the party’s wom-en’s Day celebrations at Kibuye, a Kampala suburb.
Earlier, he said the Police was headed by wrong-doers who should be in prison.
“The Inspector General (of Police), Maj. Gen. Kale Kaihura, has never been trained as a policeman and the CID chief, Elizabeth Kuteesa, must be in prison for telling court lies on oath during a rape case against me. So I am not surprised to see the Police behave the way it does.”
Police last Monday sprayed teargas in the city centre to disperse besigye’s supporters, in which one child died and several people injured.
Besigye, who spoke in Luganda and English, vowed that FDC would never ask for permission to hold any of its activities across the country. He also called upon his supporters to overthrow the “rogue regime” before 2011.
The celebrations went ahead undisturbed, despite the fact that the party was prepared for teargas and Police action.
“We are thankful that security personnel have not accosted us today to disrupt our celebrations. We are happy that this time they have not undressed the mothers of the nation as they did early this week,” said Salaam Musumba, the party vice-president.
Musumba, who wore local slippers made from tyres, known as ttangira enyana, amused the gathering when she said “Today I came wearing ttangira, ready for more tear gas.”
Besigye called for the recognition of heroic women who worked for the empowerment of their folk.
He named women activists like former minister Rhoda Kalema, former MP Joyce Mpanga, the first female university graduate Sarah Ntiiro, Gertrude Byanyima (Besigye’s mother-in-law), Prof. Gertrude ssemwogere (wife of former DP president Paul ssemogerere), UPC president Miria Obote, opposition MP Cecilia Ogwal and former ethics minister Miria Matembe.
