Ali considers action against p

THE suspended treasurer and general manager of the Fiji Police Credit Union, Inspector Nasir Ali is contemplating taking legal action against the Fiji Police Force for defamation.

IP Ali who is the chief investigator in an Anti-Corruption Unit set up to look into allegations of corruption, was suspended on January 19 over allegations of breaching regulations of the credit union.

He said his name had been publicly "ridiculed" for quite some time now, ever since he made complaints against police officers on the police accounts and Agriculture Scam investigations in 2004.

IP Ali said he was thinking of taking the matter to court as his reputation was being tarnished.

On the suspension, he said the credit union was governed by a separate body and was not under the Police Force.

IP Ali believes corrupt police officers were behind the move.

He denied a media report that he had been suspended from the force.

IP Ali said the suspension from the credit union was made on the same day it was announced that he was to head the new unit. He believes it was done so that investigations against the officers would not proceed.

IP Ali said the unit was looking into more than 20 cases on allegations of abuse of office in the force. Assistant Commissioner Police Professional Standards Unit, Jese Marovia whose team is involved in investigations into the Credit Union reserved his comments yesterday.

He said a directive had been issued by the military for him not to make statements that anything to do with Inspector Ali.

Inspector Ali was removed as head of the investigations into the agricultural scam in 2004 amid allegations that one of the investigators had compromised his position.

He was then transferred to Nausori Police Station as officer-in-charge but instead took outstanding leave from the force.
