EU to send police mission to A
The European Union Foreign Ministers' Council agreed Monday to send a police mission to Afghanistan to help in reforming the police system of the country.
"The mission will work towards an Afghan police force in local township, that respects human rights and operates within the framework of the rule of law," said a statement issued following a meeting of the Council Monday evening.
EU Commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner , told a press conference that the mission aims at "a much better training of these people and also a better selection because what we want to avoid in the future is corruption... Only then more stability can come in Afghanistan."
The mission which is part of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) will also address issues of police reform at central, regional and provincial level and also engage in reforming the justice sector.
This justice programme will aim to professionalise the judicial and public prosecution service through reforms to pay, grading and recruitment, as well as the establishment of a code of ethics.
