Lawyer fears police plot
LAWYER Zarah Garde-Wilson has accused Victoria Police of engaging in an elaborate conspiracy aimed at forcing her out of the legal profession.
But while police believe she has joined one of the Melbourne underworld's "significant tribes", she says her recent conviction for contempt of court was part of a plan in which police put her in to a position where it was inevitable.
Garde-Wilson, who represents a string of Melbourne figures, said the plan had been put together by officers of the Purana gangland taskforce.
The 27-year-old solicitor was convicted of contempt ... Read more

Indiscipline is Slowly Creepin
EDITORIAL
December 7, 2005
Over the past few days, the public has been inunda
Just the other day there was a disturbing report in the press of police officers and members of the army who went way outside their duty and forced people to engage in unnatural acts.
As reported in our yesterday edition, the officers allegedly forced a group of people to engage in a sexual orgy much against their will. This by itself is morally irreprehensible.
The unfortunate thing is that this transgression was done on visitors. Reports say the victims are Zimbabweans. In our culture, we revere and keep the best for visitors, but these officers did the exact opposite and showed their worst to visitors. If it is true that such an incident happened, we can only say with shame that this does not represent us.
It is unlike us. The officers have not been good ambassadors of the Setswana culture that we are so proud of. We do not want such immoral acts to be visited upon anybody, but the fact that this abuse was allegedly visited upon Zimbabweans is bad enough. Of late there have been some low-level skirmishes between Batswana and Zimbabweans and this incident will not help the deteriorating relationships.
We however trust that Batswana and Zimbabweans are much more sane to know that this is an isolated incident that should be avoided in the maintenance of good relations between the two neighbourly nations.
As Batswana and Zimbabweans, we have enjoyed fraternal relations that should not be spoilt by this incident.
The goodwill that exists between Zimbabwe and Botswana cannot be destroyed by a single infantile act of foolishness.Batswana and police authorities should be concerned that there are occasional slip-ups that are slowly creeping into the service and it is these incidents that will tarnish the good name of the police service and the integrity of Batswana. Just yesterday, two other police officers were hauled before the magistrate court for breaking into an office with the sole purpose of stealing.
Of course, these people do not constitute the police service. We are fully aware that the service is made up of committed and diligent officers who hold true to their oath. Authorities should be resolute in stemming out acts of indiscipline in the service.
