Anti-Corruption Bureau nabs ACP for bribery after he was reported by a police inspector

Cyrus Dabeerwala, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways), was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Friday for attempting to bribe a police inspector.

The sequence of events started with two Indore-based businessmen — Kishore Wadvani (44) and Anil Sharma (42) — who were involved in a gutka con. The two had been buying Manikchand gutka packets and re-selling them under a fictitious brand name, Malikchand. When Manikchand heard of this, it appealed to the sessions court.

The case was directed to the Azad Maidan police station with assistant police inspector Mahendra Jamrao as investigating officer. It was then that ACP Dabeerwala offered Jamrao Rs5 lakh to destroy all the papers and evidence implicating the two businessmen.

Instead of accepting the bribe, Jamrao registered a case against Dabeerwala with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). When he went to collect the down payment of Rs1 lakh promised by Dabeerwala, Jamrao took ACB officials along with him.

The ACB arrested Dabeerwala and the businessmen, who were later produced before special ACB judge SS Joshi. Dabeerwala later said that the two businessmen had approached him to destroy documents in return for money. The judge has remanded them to police custody till January 29.
