Victorian police corruption 'd

A former head of the National Crime Authority alleges that corruption within the Victorian police force is "deep-seated and continuing".

Don Stewart says the Victorian Government does not want to hold a royal commission into the force because "it would reveal what they don't want revealed".

The former New South Wales Supreme Court judge has made the claims in a book to be published later this year.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for the Ethical Standards Department, Luke Cornelius, says the allegations are disappointing.

"Any allegation of course bears investigation but ultimately any action we take has to be based on evidence," he said.

"If Justice Stewart has evidence which he wishes to bring to our attention, I'd be happy to hear from him."

Assistant Commissioner Cornelius says the police force does not favour moving to a royal commission model.

"It's certainly our view in the Victoria Police that we have both an effective Ethical Standards Department and now more particularly, and over the past couple of years, a much more effective capacity to deal with corruption through the operations of the Office of Police Integrity," he said.
