Officer Accused of Brutality S
A police officer said on Saturday that he did nothing improper last month when he and other officers stopped and subdued a 24-year-old man in a Brooklyn subway station. The man has claimed that he was sodomized with a piece of police equipment during the confrontation.

“I did absolutely nothing wrong,” the officer, Richard Kern, 25, said in a statement released by his lawyer, John D. Patten.

MP denies victimisation after

The Queensland Member of Parliament representing the far northern community of Aurukun has denied the re-arrest of a man whose allegations of police brutality sparked a riot last week will create more tension in the town.

Warren Bell was released on conditional bail yesterday after appearing in court on assault charges.

Last week, Bell alleged he was bashed by police in a jail cell at Aurukun.

That sparked a riot by 300 people, who targeted the police station and other local buildings.

Early this morning, police in Cairns took the 22-year-old back into custody for allegedly breaching his bail.

Member for Cook Jason O'Brien says it is unfair to suggest police are treating Bell differently from any other alleged offender.

"I understand that Warren has made allegations against police - they're going to be investigated," he said.

"But there's other members of the community that've made allegations about Warren, in terms of his behaviour, and he's going to have to deal with that aspect of the charges as well."

Police re-arrested Bell at 12:30am AEST after attending two disturbances in the Cairns suburb of Mooroobool.

Bell is appearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court today, charged with breaching bail conditions, which included obeying a curfew from 8pm to 7am.

Bell's allegations of police brutality are now being investigated by the police Ethical Standards Unit and the Crime and Misconduct Commission.

Acting Premier Anna Bligh says a meeting organised by the Aurukun Mayor on Monday will try to restore peace to the community in the wake of last week's riots.

Communities Minister Warren Pitt, Acting Police Minister Andrew Fraser and the Acting Police Commissioner will attend the meeting in Aurukun.

Ms Bligh says a number of matters will be discussed, including the investigation of Bell's allegations of police brutality.

"It is important I think that that community have confidence in the outcome of that investigation so that they can move forward in partnership with police, in the long-term to secure law and order in that community," she said.
