Ferriday chief faces ethics bo
FERRIDAY — Police Chief Richard Madison is being called before the Louisiana Board of Ethics Thursday.

On Feb. 13, Board of Ethics Attorney Alesia M. Ardoin requested the subpoena for Madison to appear before the board for alleged nepotism charges.

Police integrity

POLICE face 2007 with a public less trusting of their integrity, according to the Herald Sun issues survey.

But readers should balance that against Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon's campaign to improve the ethical standards of police.

The drop in confidence from 71 per cent in 2005 to 65.5 per cent in 2006 has no doubt been caused by the jailing of six police, most of them former drug squad detectives on trafficking or related charges.

But that they were convicted, and the problem rooted out, is a positive sign.

Police are entitled to feel proud of their achievements. The road toll was lower, hoons' cars were impounded, and the crime rate dropped for a fifth consecutive year.

Security at the Commonwealth Games was flawless, with minimal disruption.

Also, the Office of Police Integrity is starting to work, though it is under intense pressure over its tackling of criminals' allegations against the disbanded armed offenders squad.

Police must continue to show they know how to combine ethics and effectiveness if they are to regain Victorians' full trust.
