Police corruption watchdog gra

The federal Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, has officially granted Victoria's Office of Police Integrity (OPI) the power to intercept telecommunications.

The Federal Government delayed granting the power to the OPI because of concerns there was no independent body to supervise the anti-corruption agency.

The Victorian Government has since established a new office to monitor the use of interception powers.

Mr Ruddock says he is now satisfied the OPI will be kept accountable.

"You need to be satisfied that when the task is being carried out it's being carried out with integrity and in accordance with the legislative framework, in accordance with the law, and that means you need independent monitoring of it," he said.
