Policing the police
BROOKSVILLE — Sgt. Kathleen Reid can clear a room with an envelope.
It’s true the sheriff’s lone internal affairs investigator often serves allegations by hand. But Reid is amused when everyone watches her carry personal letters to the mail room.
“Everyone wants to see what office I’m going to,” she said, laughing.
Such is the life in internal affairs, the department assigned to “police the police.”
When a complaint is lodged against a deputy, it is Reid’s job determine whether the charges are true.

Furtado asks BOE to clarify in
Carol Furtado, a police commissioner exonerated by the Board of Ethics last month, has asked it to discuss two matters of the case in front of the public at its meeting Tuesday — a discussion originally slated to be held behind closed doors.
The BOE investigation of Furtado, which ensued for more than a year and a half, began after three complaints were lodged in September 2004 against her.
Two of the three separate allegations against Furtado, which related to the selection process of K.C. Lum as a police chief, were initially withdrawn, something Furtado wants clarified in the exoneration itself, citing it a matter of “verbiage,” she said.
The only allegation that remained to be investigated was whether Furtado conducted herself in a fair and impartial manner in the chief of police selection process.
That allegation was found by retired Judge E. John McConnell to be without merit. The BOE accepted his recommendation in mid-October. It released its decision Nov. 14.
BOE Chair Michael Fernandes said yesterday that he hadn’t yet reviewed the agenda and couldn’t comment on whether Furtado’s case would be discussed outside of executive session.
The BOE agenda is not available online.
The board, which is responsible for initiating, receiving, hearing and investigating complaints of violations of the code of ethics, will meet next at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the civic center.
