State police now on case of mo

Illinois State Police are investigating how a mother of eight died within 90 minutes of being arrested by Dixmoor police Dec. 1.

Six days after Felicia Turner, 41, died after being arrested at Dixmoor Fruit and Meat Market, Dixmoor Mayor Keevan Grimmett on Thursday made good on a promise to invite in outside investigators, Illinois State Police spokesman Lincoln Hampton said.

Dixmoor police refused to discuss details of Turner's arrest on suspicion of theft until Tuesday, angering her young family.

Turner's eldest son, Ronald Jennings, 23, said Turner had fresh bruises on her body when he saw it at the morgue, but Grimmett says she was not mistreated.

On Wednesday, the mayor said he had invited Illinois State Police to investigate Tuesday.

But speaking Thursday evening, Hampton said, "The mayor called this morning.

"The public integrity unit is investigating -- it will take some time but they will do a meticulous, thorough job."

The Cook County medical examiner's office is awaiting results of a toxicology test to complete Turner's autopsy.

Grimmett did not return calls Thursday evening.
