South Africa: Police chief in
South Africa's police commissioner Jackie Selebi sought Thursday to prevent prosecutors from bringing charges following an inquiry into his alleged underworld links, a radio station reported.
A spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed it had been served with papers by Selebi, while officials at Pretoria high court said that an application from him would be heard on Friday.
Talk Radio 702, quoting a copy of the application, said Selebi -- who is also president of Interpol, the international police liaison agency -- was seeking "an interdict preventing the Sco... Read more

Plainfield chief faces new inv
PLAINFIELD -- The Police Commission Wednesday approved a separate investigation into Police Chief Gary Sousa's professional ethics, after residents filed formal letters of complaint with the Plainfield Police Internal Affairs office last week.
The newest investigation of Sousa comes as the Police Commission, an elected board, continues a separate investigation of allegations of harassment against the chief.
The commission approved the latest investigation at a special meeting and has allowed Deputy Chief Robert Hoffman time off from his duties to conduct it. Hoffman, who is head of internal affairs, said after the meeting he intends to have a report within six weeks.
"I don't think it's going to be easy, but it's still part of my duty and responsibility," Hoffman said. "(I've investigated) only people below me."
The latest complaints against Sousa are connected to the ongoing investigation that began last spring and is being completed by a two-member police commission subcommittee. They are looking into allegations of harassment brought by three town employees against Sousa.
Residents David Ertsgard, John Dubois and George Krecidlo each filed formal letters of complaint against the chief with the internal affairs office after commission Chairman Jackie Dubois released phone records last month showing Sousa had been in regular contact this summer with individuals involved in the investigation, including four of the five commission members and investigation witnesses.
Ertsgard has filed a seven-charge complaint, including conduct unbecoming an officer, undue influence, incompetence and neglect of duty or disobedience of orders. He also includes ethical violations claims against the police commission.
"It's important to hold our elected officials accountable," Ertsgard said. "Look at the phone logs -- you can put the puzzle together pretty quick."
The three have been publicly critical of the chief's original investigation of misconduct.
Dubois, who did not receive phone calls from Sousa, said the board is biased and at a meeting last month asked the commissioners to recuse themselves. The commissioners refused and voted to allow the board subcommittee to complete the investigation.
"This is the way commissions should work and bring things to a quick resolution," Dubois said.
Sousa attended Wednesday's meeting, but could not be reached for comment afterward.
