Cop theft case goes by the book

Right is right. Whether the alleged crime is as small as a former Port Huron police officer's use of a St. Clair County-issued gas card for personal use or much greater crimes, the law must be enforced.

David Fajardo is charged with embezzlement of less than $200. He admitted to using a sheriff department gas card for his own vehicle while working with the county's drug task force - and county officials are playing this matter by the book.

The Chicago Police Department has been under a lot of pressure to deal with allegations of corruption. The department's top officials have perpetuated "a practice of indifference" to corruption that "makes officers who engage in misconduct feel protected," says the report by consultant Lou Reiter, a former deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. The officials say that Reiter's view is based on a small amount of information and that he doesn't really know what's going on. In July, two prosecutors claimed that two policement tortured suspects in the 80s. Four members of the of the Special Operations Section were charged in September with false arrests, kidnapping and robbery. There are actually two feds suing the city and that was the reason for this report. The two federal agents were trying to help blow the whistle on police corruption but instead had their careers and credibility attacked. The man they tried to blow the whistle on has now been convicted and is spending his life behind bars. The two federal agents were targeted by the Chicago Internal Affairs office instead of the office going after the corrupt officer.

It is amazing what those who are supposed to help protect are the ones who we need to be protected from.
