The dark side of the force
Sad to say tha 14 policemen have been killed this year, some citizens (even decent, law-abiding and highly educated ones) remain devoid of sympathy, trust and respect for the constabulary. Over the years, the behaviour of a few cops has caused this.

Police corruption, excesses, reckless abandon, unprofessional behaviour, extrajudicial killings and extortion alienate civilians, compromise the efficiency of the force, serve to entrench and even promulgate criminality. Some inner-city residents exist symbiotically with gangsters because they discern very little difference between them... Read more

Hopeful's police chief plan sp

INDEPENDENCE TWP. | A retired township police sergeant said Thursday he's waging a write-in campaign against a township committeeman who has become public enemy No. 1 to the police department.

Tony Carvino said he decided to challenge Committeeman Steve Crawford after the committeeman announced this week he wants to look outside the police department for the next police chief and would apply for the job himself in that case. Crawford is a police sergeant in Mendham Township, N.J.

He was appointed this summer to fill Christina Saville's committee seat when she resigned for health reasons. Crawford, a Republican, has to run in Tuesday's election to hold onto that seat. No candidates filed by the deadline to run against him.

"I don't think Steve Crawford has the best interest of the town in mind. He's in it for his own agenda," said Carvino, 51, who served 18 years on the township police department.

Township police officers and some residents objected to Crawford's involvement in the chief selection at a Monday township committee meeting. A state Police Benevolent Association officer said he planned to file an ethics complaint against Crawford for his involvement.

Crawford told The Express-Times on Wednesday he would recuse himself from discussing the police chief appointment when the committee takes it up again Monday.

He did not return a call for comment Thursday regarding Carvino's write-in campaign.

Mayor Bob Giordano and Deputy Mayor Bonnie Kelsey, both Republicans, are running unopposed in Tuesday's election for their two township committee seats.
