Detectives on trial for fake d

A SYDNEY court has committed two former National Crime Authority (NCA) officers to stand trial over fake drugs busts.
Former NSW Police detective Samuel John Foster, 41, and James Anthony McCabe, 36, formally of Victoria Police, allegedly faked arrests to steal money and drugs.

They were investigated by the Police Integrity Commission (PIC) in 2004 for corruption during their time as officers for the NCA, now the Australian Crime Commission.

Following the PIC probe, the pair were charged with offences including armed robbery, drug trafficking, corruption, and attempting to obtain benefit by deception.

Downing Centre Local Court Magistrate Pat O'Shane today committed Mr Foster to stand trial in the District Court on 16 charges and Mr McCabe on two, following a five-day committal hearing.

"Having regard to all the evidence before the court I'm certainly well satisfied ... that there's a reasonable prospect that a reasonable jury, properly instructed, could convict (Mr McCabe and Mr Foster) of these offences,'' Magistrate O'Shane told the court.

Mr Foster was remanded in custody, and a warrant for Mr McCabe's arrest was continued.

Mr McCabe remains in Cambodia, where he fled after giving evidence to the PIC in 2004 - a country with which Australia has no extradition treaty.

The trial has been listed for November 3 in the District Court.
