Aboriginal actor's complaint a
Saskatchewan's police complaints investigator has dismissed a Toronto actor's accusation that he was a victim of racial profiling.

The investigator's office said Wednesday that while Gregory Odjig may have been inconvenienced one Sunday morning last fall, the officers who confronted and handcuffed him were not acting improperly.

Odjig was in Saskatoon for a project with the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company.

Police looking for an assault suspect saw him leaving a convenience store and rushing down a sidewalk on the day in question.

Change the image of Police: PM

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called upon the IPS probationers to make all out efforts to change the image of the police and make it a force that looks after the welfare of one and all.

Speaking at the passing out parade of 58th batch of IPS probationers at Saradar Vallabbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, he reminded them that they are on case in the role of investigators and not judges.

Describing terrorism as the most dangerous threat, the Prime Minister said that from an occasional footnote, it has become a hydra-headed monster with transnational linkages and adequate resources. "The nuances of each situation have to be appreciated and skillfully dealt with. Understand the reason for disaffection and alienation and try to bring the alienated back to the path governed by the law of the land", he added.

Cautioning the probationers against ignoring some of the basic functions of the police, Manmohan Singh underscored the need to create an atmosphere of security among all citizens. Asking them to maintain high standards of professional excellence, integrity and honesty, he said "show courage, determination, steadfastness of purpose and the necessary resilience to meet the challenges".

Touching upon the evils of organized crime, an off-shot of large urban agglomerations, the Prime Minister suggested that the officers should understand the complexity of forces influencing the march of our policy to work in effective and efficient manner.

Calling for humane attitude, he called upon the officers to make the victims their partners in the fight against crime. "You must treat the men and women in your force with compassion, dignity and respect. We must end feudal vestings in our services where lower staff are treated like menials", he observed.

Seventy-eight IPS probationers including eight women, four officers from Royal Bhutan Police Force and three from Maldives Police Force completed their 45-week long training at the Academy.
