Veteran Arab cop trial set Mon
Suspended officer accused of soliciting sex to drop tickets
GUNTERSVILLE - The trial of suspended Arab Police Officer Shane Alldredge, accused of soliciting sexual favors in exchange for dropping tickets, is scheduled to begin Monday in Marshall County Circuit Court in Guntersville.
In June 2005, a grand jury indicted Alldredge, a seven-year veteran of the department and a SWAT team leader, on charges he offered to dismiss or not issue ticAn investigation into the case began more than two years ago. District Attorney Steve Marshall said in a June 2005 interview that several women were interviewed but only four are listed as victims in the indictments. He said Alldredge allegedly solicited sex from the victims while on duty.
Marshall said Alldredge is also accused of violating a state ethics law prohibiting public employees from soliciting anything of value in exchange for influencing an official action. Alldredge faces up to 10 years in prison for each count, if convicted.
Mayor Frank Lee Cox suspended Alldredge without pay on May 11, 2005, on the recommendation of Police Chief Mike Blackwood.
Alldredge was arrested in June 2005 after he turned himself in to authorities. He was released from jail on a $2,500 bond.
In March, Alldredge's lawyer, Randy Gladden of Huntsville, said he plans to bring up at the trial missing videotapes that would refute some, if not all, of the claims against his client.
The tapes in question were supposedly made from a camera mounted in Alldredge's patrol car. The recording of traffic stops is an increasingly common practice in law enforcement.
Gladden said 18 tapes were made, but Marshall said in March his office only has three that are relevant to Alldredge's case and knows nothing about any missing ones.
Marshall said, however, a sheriff's investigator did look into it, but could not determine what had happened to them.
B.J. Harper, who retired as a captain from the police department in November, said in March there were about 15 tapes stored in a department closet that he had shown to the FBI last year, but has not seen them since. He said he did not realize the tapes had disappeared until Alldredge asked for them.
Circuit Judge David Evans will preside over the trial.
