Australia: Missing police cash prompts ethics probe
ASSISTANT Commissioner Graham Ashton has pledged to improve surveillance after thousands of dollars in cash evidence went missing from Victoria Police's crime department.

The Ethical Standards Department is investigating the suspected theft of $5000 that had been seized as evidence by police in November 2010.

Mr Ashton told The Age yesterday that monitoring equipment and procedures needed to be upgraded in the logistics and exhibits office, where the systems were installed in 2006.

Police association to oppose a

The Sacramento Police Officers Association announced Wednesday afternoon its opposition to a countywide sales-tax increase that would in part pay for a new sports and entertainment arena.

Association president Jerry Camous and state Assemblyman Dave Jones said the police department is not adequately staffed to patrol the proposed downtown entertainment district.

"The Sacramento Police Department is already stretched to the limit, operating with 25 percent less officers than they need," the association said in a press release. "The Sacramento Police Officers Association believes that a fully staffed police department is a missing piece of the vibrant city that the 'Quality of Life' tax promises."

The release said of 796 law enforcement positions authorized by the city, only 674 are filled. The association attributed that gap to officers leaving the city for suburban poice departments with more resources and better workloads.

Jones questioned regional priorities, and said flood control and police staffing should rank above "relief for billionaires."

If approved by voters in November, the quarter-cent sales tax increase would raise $1.2 billion over 15 years, half for a sports and entertainment complex and half for community improvements.

One measure will ask voters to increase the sales tax by a quarter-cent per dollar -- to 8 percent -- for 15 years to raise funds "for any reason." A companion advisory measure will call for half the $1.2 billion raised through the tax increase to be put toward a new sports and entertainment arena in downtown Sacramento. The two measures are not linked, one could pass and the other could fail.
