Vietnam investigates policeman
A court in the central Vietnamese province of Danang has launched an investigation of a senior police official suspected of spreading information accusing Danang City leaders of corruption, a court official said Thursday. Major General Tran Van Thanh, chief inspector in the Ministry of Public Security and former director of the Danang Police Department, is to be investigated for his role in a campaign of corruption accusations against Danang City officials, some of whom were candidates for the National Assembly, several months before the election in May 2007.

Ehindero asks ICPC to apologis
Inspector General of Police, Sunday Ehindero yesterday demanded an official apology from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for allegedly disparaging the Nigeria Police Force as one of the most corrupt organisations in Nigeria. The controversy was sparked off when the media consultant to the ICPC Chairman and head, Public Affairs Department, ICPC, Folu Olamiti and Mike Sowe respectively had taken turns on June 28th to explain activities of the Commission, saying plans were underway for public office holders and government officials to come under public scrutiny through a forum tagged “Chairman’s Guest Forum.” While answering a question, Olamiti said: “They are not offering themselves, we are inviting them. And I can assure you we will invite the police too. We have informed them. They would be here".
But addressing the press yesterday and having listened to the defence of Sowe, the Inspector General of Police demanded an apology from the Commission.
“In the past, there was a statement like that from ICPC condemning the Nigeria Police. But when I called the chairman and we discussed, he said the news item was from last year before he came on board. We allowed that one to go. But this one, we will not let it be swept under the carpet.”
“The recent publication that the PHCN and the Nigeria Police are the most corrupt in Nigeria is embarrassing, not only to the entire Nigeria Police but to me as the head. And because of that I need justification for the publication. I need empirical data to confirm that statement.”
“If we find out that it is one of those gimmicks that people think they can talk and malign a whole institution, of course, we will not accept it any longer. We will no longer allow individuals to malign the name of the Nigeria Police any longer.” In his defence before the gathering, Sowe said, “One of the journalists wanted to know what criteria we are using. I said okay, some few years ago, some surveys were conducted by about four institutions, it was conducted in 2001 but was published in 200.” Reacting to this defence, Ehindero said, “from my own sense of judgement, though I would not want to jump into conclusions, but for you to rely on a bogus 2001 research, is not acceptable because we know life is dynamic. Things have changed”.
