Five Nassau police officers cl

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) Five female police officers have sued the Nassau County Police Department, claiming sexual harassment and discrimination.

The three separate filings two federal lawsuits and one complaint to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission names more than a dozen male employees in the police department.

Police Commissioner James Lawrence said all the complaints would be investigated.

"I'm sending a message that we are not going to tolerate that behavior," Lawrence told Newsday in Wednesday editions.

The five women, whose service on the police force ranged from 18 to 23 years, claim they were passed over for promotions, overtime and better assignments in favor of men.

They charged that the officers posted pornography in a police station, made lewd remarks, disobeyed orders by women and gave preferential treatment to men, Newsday reported.

The Nassau police department has 4,000 employees. Before Lawrence took over in 2002, there was only one female police chief. Today there are three, the paper said.
