Police owning bars - a conflict of interest?
FITCHBURG — Police Chief Robert A. DeMoura said yesterday he is reviewing the practice of police officers owning bars in the city.

Chief DeMoura said he agrees there is the potential for impropriety at bars owned by police officers.

While on the department as a sergeant in Lowell, he said, he sold his bar, the Brass Lantern, in 1996 because he thought it was a conflict of interest. Also, the Lowell police chief at the time reviewed the practice and five other police officers subsequently sold their bars, he said.

“It was just common sense,” he said.

Gary police sued in man's deat

CROWN POINT, Ind. -- The family of a man who died in the custody of Gary police claims in a lawsuit that excessive force by officers caused his death.

Kinnell Magee's death was captured on a nine-minute video shot by a neighbor from her window, attorney Michael P. Stryjewski said.
Stryjewski filed a lawsuit on behalf of Magee's family in Lake Superior Court, seeking damages from four unidentified officers, former Gary Police Chief Garnett Watson and the city.
Magee, 24, of Gary died Feb. 26, 2004. Police said he was naked, disoriented and uncooperative when officers found him in the street near his home.
The video, which Stryjewski made public Wednesday, shows Magee face down in the street with a police officer kneeling over him. Magee briefly raises his right leg before going prone. Officers flip him on his back and he remains motionless for the rest of the tape.
Stryjewski said Magee's death was caused by an officer who put him in a choke-hold with a baton.
Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeff Wells said Magee, who weighed more than 350 pounds, died from cardiac arrhythmia, an enlarged heart, obesity and kidney failure. The autopsy results found no signs of broken bones, bruises or indication Magee had been choked.
Lalosa Burns, a spokeswoman for Mayor Scott King, said Thursday that city officials had not yet received a copy of the lawsuit and could not comment.
