Bloomer police officer fired
Bloomer police officer Chris King has an eight-day-old baby. He also just moved into a house he built within the Bloomer School District, as required of city employees by local ordinance.

And now he’s without a job.

Acting Bloomer Police Chief Randy Summerfield — who is Bloomer’s mayor — called King into the police department Tuesday afternoon and summarily fired him.

Fiji: Police address abuse of power

WEST Police Commander Senior Superintendent Salacieli Naivilawasa has sent his men a strong message - eradicate corruption in the force.

In an address at the Western Police Parade at Churchill Park which drew officers from Rakiraki to Sigatoka on Friday, SSP Naivilawasa said: "Power comes with responsibility and the abuse of this responsibility undermines the credibility of individual officers, the police force and the country."

SSP Naivilawasa said he received reports on the disappearance of investigation files.

"There are also cases of deliberate delays in investigations merely because the complainant is related or a friend or of the same ethnic or religious group," he said.

The former national rugby skipper player warned the officers against giving or taking bribes.

"My office will ensure that stringent measures will be taken against corrupt police officers in the division," he said.

SSP Naiviliwasa also thanked Sheik Khan, an officer from Tavua, for his honesty in a case which involved corruption.

He advised the officers to take their jobs seriously because the community depended upon them for safety and security.

"Many times I receive a surge of complaints because we are unable to satisfy the needs of complainants - I will not accept future complaints of this nature," he added.
