Sheriff's sergeant resigns ami

An alleged sex scandal led a veteran Washington County sheriff's deputy to resign last week and caused two Marietta police officers and a city firefighter to be placed on paid leave over the weekend, according to Sheriff Larry Mincks.

Few details about the nature of the allegations are being released as internal affairs officers continue to investigate.

Sheriff Larry Mincks said Sgt. Robert Eddy, who started at the sheriff's office in May 1994, resigned effective June 3 after he was questioned about possible "inappropriate behavior involving a woman."

The only statement Eddy made in regard to the questions was that he was resigning, Mincks said.

"Some of the information we gathered also pertained to Marietta City Fire Department and Police Department," Mincks said. "It all related to the same female, and we forwarded all of that information to (city officials)."

The sheriff said the allegations are all related and sexual in nature.

He said he did not expect any criminal charges to be filed against Eddy or any of the city employees.

"I believe this is just an internal affairs matter," Mincks said.

Mincks said he was notified of the alleged misconduct by a Parkersburg attorney who is representing the woman in question in a narcotics case. He declined to reveal more information, including the woman's name.

Marietta police Capt. Jeff Waite said one officer was placed on leave Friday and another on Saturday. He declined to release the names of the officers or to elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

"We are currently investigating allegations of possible inappropriate activity by two of our police officers," Waite said. "This is still currently under investigation, and that's all I can release at this time."

Waite said he was not sure how long the investigation could take.

Assistant fire Chief Marc Coppernoll referred all inquiries to Marietta City Safety-Service Director Chad Presley, who confirmed a city firefighter had been placed on paid leave Friday. Presley declined to name the employee or to elaborate on the nature of the complaint.

Reached later, fire Chief Tom Dempsey said placing the firefighter on leave was standard procedure while the allegations were investigated. He said any other information would have to come from Presley.

It's unknown if the city employees have had discipline issues in the past, but Mincks said Eddy had been disciplined for "a problem of a similar nature" once before.

"He was given two weeks suspension for that (previous) offense," Mincks said, adding the suspension was later modified to suspension with pay.

The Marietta Times asked to review Eddy's personnel file, but Mincks said it would not be available until this afternoon.

A phone number for Eddy could not be located.

Marietta City Law Director Roland Riggs III was aware of the investigations, but said he could not comment.
