Warrant Says Hartford Officer
HARTFORD - — A city police officer accused of assaulting a prisoner in November allegedly boasted to several fellow officers about beating the man.

One of those officers was Sgt. Robert E. Ford Jr., who is assigned to the internal affairs division, which investigates allegations of police misconduct.

Misconduct charges dropped aga

Professional misconduct charges against a former Niagara Regional Police officer accused of having sex with several women in his cruiser have been dropped.

NRP Const. Steven Chitty resigned from the force on Dec. 31, and there is no reason to “proceed with these misconduct charges,” Acting Supt. Lorne Lillico told a police disciplinary board Tuesday morning.

Chitty, a 20-year veteran of the force, had faced several counts of misconduct under the Police Services Act.

Police alleged Chitty had sex on several occasions in his police cruiser with five different women between Sept. 1, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2005.

He also faced misconduct allegations of disobeying orders by associating with an informant in an unprofessional way, failing to document all contact with an informant; failing to immediately turn over seized property; and not recording daily activities.

Chitty had entered a not guilty plea.

The Special Investigations Unit, a provincial police watchdog, looked into the sexual assault complaints lodged against Chitty by six women and concluded there was no grounds to charge Chitty with a criminal offence.

Last February, Chitty was cleared of criminal charges of uttering threats against a woman.
