Officials look into alleged co

Juárez city officials met with city public safety director Roberto Orduña Cruz Tuesday to discuss possible police corruption at businesses near the U.S. Consulate.

Officials said business owners have complained about being approached by police officers for operating without business permits. Officers then demand a bribe in exchange for letting them operate without a permit.

City officials have begun an investigation into the complaints, and are urging business owners to report the incidents. Detectives will also conduct surveillance in the area to catch the officers responsible for extorting money, officials said.

Crime worries: About 25 business owners located in the Centro de Zaragoza shopping center in Juárez met with police and city officials Tuesday to discuss rising crime in the area. Business owners complained they were forced to move out of the shopping center because of an increase in vehicle thefts and armed robberies. Officials told business owners that police patrols will be increased. Another meeting will take place Nov. 18 to discuss how an investigation into the incidents has progressed, and whether the extra police patrols have deterred crimes.
