Taser complaint before police

A complaint has been filed to the Quebec Police Ethics Commission in the case of the Montreal man who died after being tasered by police last fall.

The complaint filed by Quilem Registre's father alleges that Montreal police officers were negligent when they tasered his son last October and that using the Taser caused his death a few days later. Dan Philip is president of the Black Coalition of Quebec which helped in filing the complaint.

"The complaint deals with excessive force, it deals with abuse of power."

Registre was zapped by a Taser while in police custody, officers suspecting him of drunk driving and claiming he became aggressive during questioning and resisted arrest.

Philip says he hopes the police ethics commission will shed more light on this affair and that while criminal charges are unlikely....

"What we can speak of, is the dismissal of the people who were responsible."

Philip is part of a coalition calling for a moratorium on taser use by police.
