Ill need proper care ~ police
THE Police Association has defended officers blamed by the force watchdog for shooting dead mentally ill people.
The association's state secretary Paul Mullett said the officers should never have had to confront the mentally ill people who were shot.
"These people really shouldn't be out and about in the community," Sen-Sgt Mullett said. "It is police officers on the front line who have to deal with these people -- and they shouldn't have to. These people should be under proper care in proper accommodation."

Sen-Sgt Mullett said the responsible government departments sho... Read more

SEA calls for inquiry into Wat

The Socialist Environmental Alliance (SEA) in Derry has called for an investigation into police misconduct after two neighbours who went to the aid of a woman whose house was being attacked in the Waterside's Anderson Crescent were themselves arrested, one of whom was sprayed in the face with CS spray and required
hospital treatment for the injuries he received during arrest.
Colm Bryce, spokesperson for the SEA, told the 'Journal': "We have spoken to one of the men arrested and believe that this is a clear-cut case of police misconduct.

"We believe that senior police who arrived on the scene know this, too. The use of CS spray at close quarters, on a man attempting to walk away, was completely unjustified. We wish to protest in the strongest possible terms about his arrest, the extensive injuries he sustained and about the use of CS spray.

Mr Bryce said that police phone records would show that those arrested were, in actual fact, the ones who had called the police in the first place.

The men had responded as "good neighbours" to a large group attacking the house of young mother, whose windows had already been smashed earlier that night.

"They said they were relieved when they saw the police arrive, because they were badly outnumbered by the crowd attacking the house - but within minutes they were the ones being arrested."

Mr. Bryce said that one of those arrested was in pyjamas and bare feet and had made no threat when he was sprayed in the face with CS spray, wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

"They are outraged, and rightly so, that the police did nothing about the people who had attacked the house, some of whom were standing close by with bricks in their hands," he said.

Describing the treatment of the two men "nothing short of a disgrace", Mr Bryce went on: "They were acting as good neighbours and together with the rest of their neighbours have acted many times to prevent clashes in their street. Many of their neighbours witnessed the police action on the night.

"The SEA calls for an urgent independent investigation into police behaviour in this incident and the banning of the use of CS spray by the police," he added.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed an investigation is underway after two men, aged 26 and 32-years-old, had been arrested after a disturbance in Anderson Crescent in the early hours of Saturday, August 11, and that both men had since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

"We can confirm that CS incapacitant spray was use in the arrest of one of two men. Anyone with information about the incident to contact them at Strand Road Police Station on 0845. 600. 8000.

"Anyone who has a complaint about the conduct of an officer are asked to contact their Police Ombudsman," the spokesperson added.
