Police officer jailed for lyin
Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson has urged people not to judge the state's police service after a former officer was sentenced to jail for launching a savage attack on an alleged woman shoplifter, then trying to cover it up.
Justin Anthony Burkett, 34, was sentenced on Monday to three years in jail to be suspended after nine months after pleading guilty to assault, perjury and perverting the course of justice.
The Beenleigh District Court heard the former constable hit the woman in a holding cell at a police station station at Loganholme, south of Brisbane, and then tried to get his fellow officers to lie for him.
He admitted giving false testimony at both the woman's summary trial and a Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) hearing.
Another person is still before the courts in relation to the same matter.
Commissioner Atkinson condemned Burkett's actions, describing them as completely unacceptable, but urged people not to judge the police service as a whole.
