UT cops bend rules to suit sel

If you are a relative or friend of an accused and want to meet him in the lock-up at the District Courts, you will just not be allowed to or will be made to wait the whole day till the accused are taken back to Burail Jail around 5 pm.

But if you are a relative of a Police official who has been recently booked on charges of corruption, then you can enjoy special treatment at the cost of law. UT Police officials will not only escort you inside the lock-up but will also serve tea.

Such an incedent showing a clear abuse of law was witnessed on saturday at the UT District Courts complex. Sub-Inspector Sukhdeep Singh and head constable Iqbal Singh, who were recently booked by the CBI on charges of corruption, were produced today in the UT District Courts for appearance before the CBI Judge. The relatives and friends of two had come to meet them. The UT Police officials — who do not allow any conversation with the accused — did not protest in this case.

But the real abuse of law was witnessed minutes after when the two accused were brought to the lock-up inside the UT District Courts. For, the friends who had come to meet the two were escorted inside by the Police officials themselves.

It may be mentioned here the law does not permit anybody except the accused or the lock-up officials to enter the jail. But in this case, the friends were taken inside, where they were also allowed to chat for nearly 10 minutes. The entire incident took place at around 11:25 am.

To top it all, Sub-Inspector Raghbir Singh, who is the incharge of the lock-up, ordered tea for the accused and their friends.

Meanwhile, a woman called Parvati was waiting with her two-year-old child outside to meet her husband who was in the lock-up. “I have come to meet my husband who is locked up and booked on charges of theft. I have been told to wait till 5 pm when he will be taken out to return to Burail Jail” said Parvati.

When questioned about the entire episode, SI Singh first denied the allegations. When confronted, he made improvements in his statements stating that he was not around when this may have happened.

“The ‘We Care for you brigade’ cares more for its own officials, even if they are accused of committing corruption and are behind bars. This is sheer abuse of law which does not permit anyone to meet any accused or allow eatables inside the lock up. The common people are made to suffer, while the UT Police officials are enjoying special treatment” said Advocate K P S Dhillon.
