Detectives charged over allege

Four Victorian detectives have been charged by the Office of Police Integrity (OPI) over the alleged bashing of a suspect.

Among those charged is Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin, who was appointed to clean-up the Armed Offenders Squad.

He is facing counts of counselling or procuring the commission of an assault.

Three others, Detective Senior Constable Mark Butterfield, Detective Senior Constable Robert Dabb and Detective Sergeant Matthew Franc are charged with unlawful assault.

It is alleged an armed robbery suspect was slapped, punched and kicked in an interview room at the St Kilda Road police station.

Police Association secretary Senior Sergeant Paul Mullett has questioned the conduct of the investigation by the Office of Police Integrity.

"There was no necessity, it was heavy-handed, to take these members through a public hearing of the nature that we saw late last year," he said.

"These members are entitled to the basic fundamental principal of law, the presumption of innocence and hopefully they can enjoy that going through a court of competent jurisdiction, a principal they haven't really enjoyed due to the very public hearings late last year, where there was an attempt to convict them in the court of public opinion."
