Navi Mumbai cop arrested for g

Anil Lad, a police sub-inspector with the Turbhe police, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Thane Police, while accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh on Saturday. Lad was nabbed red-handed by the ACB at the office of the deputy commissioner of police (Zone I).

According to Police Inspector Vilas Jagdale of the ACB, Lad had demanded the amount from one Santosh Ramchandra Singh, a resident of Vikhroli. Singh subsequently lodged a complaint with the ACB.

Singh was asked to cough up the money to protect two of his friends, Dilip Dhope and Chandrashekhar Dabholkar, the accused in a credit card cheating case. “Lad had asked Singh to pay him Rs 10 lakh. In return, he promised to go slow in the ongoing investigation of the case, in which he was one of the investigating officers,” said Jagdale. Lad also promised Singh that the duo’s police custody will not be extended beyond Saturday.

“He was affiliated to Turbhe police and was assisting in the investigation of the credit card case, which was registered at the APMC police station,” said DCP Jadhav, who was present in the office during the ACB’s raid.

Lad and Singh finally struck a deal of Rs 3 lakh, of which Rs 50,000 was paid on April 12 through Bhushan Ahire, the middle man.

“Rs 1.5 lakh was to be paid today at the DCP (Zone I) office,” said Jagdale.

The police have also arrested Ahire, who is a ‘dealer’, according to them. The duo will be produced before a special ACB court on Sunday after preliminary interrogations, said Jagdale.
