Actions defended in death of s

Park Forest police said Monday that they followed procedure in apprehending a mentally ill suspect who died after fighting with officers, while the man's family said he might have been spared with better officer training.

David Brown's family said police should reconsider their policies and become better educated in how to deal with psychotic suspects.

Brown, 47, a paranoid schizophrenic, walked out of his bedroom in the family home in the 200 block of Shabbona Drive on Saturday evening and began hitting his 82-year-old father in the head, police said. When Brown's brother, Thomas, tried to subdue him, Brown swung at him too, police said.

Brown, who, according to police and his family, had recently stopped taking his medication, then ran away, and his brother called police.

Deputy Chief Mike McNamara said an officer with a police dog found Brown a few blocks away and approached him. Brown punched the officer in the mouth and punched the dog too, McNamara said.

The officer tried to use his Taser on Brown, but the gun didn't make contact with his skin because his sweat shirt was too thick, McNamara said.

Finally, another officer arrived, and Brown was handcuffed and placed in an ambulance. Police said he suffered from "cardiac distress" and was pronounced dead on arrival in St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said the cause of death was "pending further studies and a police investigation."

The state police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the case.

McNamara said the officers were acting within their rights and that they do not face disciplinary action.

Still, Thomas Brown said a different approach might have saved his brother's life.

He said that if a greater number of officers had been present, Brown never would have started swinging. Brown would have recognized that he was outnumbered, his brother said.

"I don't see why the officer didn't wait for backup, keep him in sight and have plenty of police officers to assist in the cuffing," he said.
