No further 'corruption' inquir

Hamilton police and the chair of the police commission say they see nothing to warrant further investigation into allegations of corruption in the Gilbank murder investigation.

The withdrawal of murder charges in the execution-style killing of Lynn and Fred Gilbank came to public attention when the Gilbanks' children told The Spectator and the CTV program W5 they believe that police corruption caused the homicide case to collapse.

Eight years after the shotgun slayings of her parents, Kristen Gilbank Savoie said yesterday that she went public because the family's private appeals to the Ontario attorney general's office for an independent investigation have failed.

"We've given them opportunities to address what we've asked for since the day the charges were withdrawn, which is a transparent investigation," Gilbank Savoie said in an interview. "I haven't even been able to get a copy of the (Ontario Provincial Police) report."

She was referring to an internal investigation by the OPP into allegations that someone on the Hamilton force leaked confidential information about the case in a way that was helpful to Andre Gravelle and John (Johnny K-9) Croitoru. Murder charges in the 1998 slayings were dropped last summer against Gravelle, a member of an organized crime family, and Croitoru, an enforcer and former biker boss.

The two were let go after Crown prosecutors determined there was no likelihood of conviction.

Bernie Morelli, chair of the Hamilton Police Services Board, said yesterday that "there have been allegations over this leak before ... and it was unsubstantiated." He said he did not see a reason for additional investigation.

A Hamilton police spokesperson said the claim has been "reviewed, investigated and concluded" by the OPP.

"Should there be new information ... obviously that would go to the OPP to see if that file needs to be re-opened," spokesperson Catherine Martin said. "I'm not aware there's anything new."

But Gilbank Savoie, her brother Mark Gilbank, and Detective Sergeant Steve Hrab, who was in charge of the investigation, continue to claim the case fell apart because someone in the police shared sensitive information outside the department.

Gilbank Savoie says she believes there was "much more than a leak ... It's corruption all the way up."

Hrab did not return calls and representatives of Gravelle and Croitoru declined to speak with The Spectator.

The attorney general's office issued a statement Friday saying the allegations are "false, baseless, scurrilous and potentially libellous and defamatory."
