Panel suspends cop in slur
Oak Park Police Officer Christian Priesmeyer pleaded guilty Saturday to charges that he uttered a racial slur in the department's lobby and was issued a 30-day suspension without pay.

Priesmeyer, a 16-year veteran of the force, admitted to referring to a former village employee in a derogatory way during a Sept. 8 conversation he had with another officer. The comment was made in the presence of a police commander and sergeant.

Fire and Police Commission Chairman Ida Roldan Monday said her closing statements to Priesmeyer Saturday were a warning to other officers as well... Read more

Govt defends secret Vic police

The Victorian Government has defended its secret election commitment to fund legal bills for police officers under investigation by the Office of Police Integrity (OPI).

The Government will reimburse the Police Association's legal fighting fund before an officer's guilt or innocence has been determined.

The ABC has revealed the Government made the promise to the association during the November election campaign.

The association supported the Government in the lead-up to the election.

Police Minister Bob Cameron says the Government is doing the right thing using public money to defend police officers.

"Because that's what already occurs when police appear in other forums, they are summonsed to another forum, they are entitled to advice, this is a new forum, and needs to be added, that's the view of the Chief Commissioner that's the view that we accept and there should be that extension," he said.

The association's Paul Mullett says there is nothing inappropriate about the arrangement.

"It's not about getting the best silks, it's about getting solicitor's advice through a panel of solicitors prior to giving evidence to through coercive hearing and in New South Wales, that is the case," he said.

But Opposition police spokesman Andrew McIntosh says he is concerned the deal will impact on OPI investigations.

"This legal fighting fund and the use of it by the Police Association is hampering a corruption investigation, now it's going to be the Government itself funding the police and further hampering this process of investigating corrupt police," he said.

Police Commissioner Christine Nixon was not party to the deal.

Dr Darren Palmer, a lecturer in criminology and police studies at Deakin University, says the nature of the deal puts her in an impossible position.

"The dangers are that you actually have a person running a large public sector organisation who is having to carry out, potentially, things in the operation, the management and the practices of that organisation that she's been no party to, in terms of deciding the nature of those agreements," he said.

"To me that is just not tenable."
