FUGITIVE drug criminal Tony Mokbel narrowly escaped Australia because one of his lovers hid him in suburban Melbourne for several days, police believe.
Police identified the woman just too late to confirm intelligence she had hidden Mokbel in the outer suburbs before he fled overseas.
"There is credible information Mokbel was there and that we missed him by about a week," a source close to the investigation told the Herald Sun.

Police story is full of holes
Police put Anant in auto, and are now quizzing the driver
Although Uttar Pradesh Police have claimed credit for cracking the case but Anant’s surprise return has raised several questions to which the police have so far failed to provide satisfactory answers. Some of the questions to which there are no answers:
Who were the two kidnappers?
Police have so far managed to arrest one person, Jitender. They have no clue on the two men who helped him. They have so far given no clear answers on where Anant was kept or taken to.
How was Anant rescued?
Police said that Anant was taken to one of the accused, Pawan’s, Ashok Nagar house and from there he was moved to Pawan’s aunt’s house in Mathura.
Police claimed that they had identified the hideout in Mathura and were keeping a watch on the accused. However, what happened after that is not clear.
According to the police, the accused took the child from Mathura to Bulandshahar. Anant was rescued from the Kakore police station area near Bulandshahar. Interestingly, police did not make any arrests from the spot. Did the accused flee on seeing the police? Did the policemen forget to arrest the accused on seeing the child? Senior officers have no answers.
Why was Anant put in an auto?
Police said Anant was put in an auto and he traveled alone from Kakore to his Noida house. This, they say, was part of their ‘strategy’. Anant’s auto was being followed by a police van. The auto driver, however, was detained for questioning.
What makes the police claim confusing is that Anant told the press after he reached home that he was put on an auto by a bhaiyya.Why did the police not bring the child with them in their own car?
Devender Singh, the guard posted at Gupta’s place, said that there was no police van escorting Anant and that the auto driver argued with him to take Anant inside when he refused to identify the boy. “The auto driver told me that he had been given the address and asked to drop the child at the house. Since I did not recognise Anant, I asked him to go back,” Singh said.
Gupta’s, police’s conflicting versions
While Naresh Gupta said that the kidnappers spoke well, both in English and Hindi, the profile of the accused given by the police is nowhere near Gupta’s version. Police said all the accused belonged to lower middle-class families and were doing odd jobs.
